Networking as a VA: Terrifying but Totally Worth It

Let me just say it upfront – I love networking… but oh my god, do I panic while I’m waiting for my turn to speak. The sweaty palms, the quick glances at my notes, the internal pep talk -“You’ve got this, Lynsey. You’re not just a VA. You’re amazing. You’ve even juggled to prove it!”

(Yes, really. I once literally juggled at the end of my speech/pitch – to show I was a multitasker. Bold? Maybe. Memorable? Definitely.)

As a Virtual Assistant for small business owners, I know networking is one of the best tools we’ve got. It gets you seen, it builds trust, and it puts your name on the radar of the people who matter. And whether you’re brand new or a seasoned pro, making connections can make all the difference between chasing clients and having them come to you.

Why Networking is a Game-Changer for VAs

People don’t just want a service; they want a person they connect with. Someone who “gets” them. When you show up in a room (virtual or in person), you’re showing them that you exist, that you’re confident, and that you’re the business support for entrepreneurs they’ve been searching for.

The truth is, if you’re affordable, reliable, and genuinely helpful –  and people know that you exist –  you’re already halfway there.

But if they don’t know you exist? That’s where it gets tricky.

5 Tips for VAs to Nail Networking (Even If You’re Nervous)

  1. Don’t say “I’m just a VA”
  2. You are a Virtual Assistant for small business owners who makes their lives easier. Own it. Speak confidently about the services you offer and the problems you solve.
  3. Stand up (if you can)
  4. Sounds small, but it makes a difference. You’ll look more confident, and people will remember you.
  5. Be memorable – in a good way
  6. I juggled. You don’t have to do that (unless you want to). But think about something fun or visual that helps people remember you. A creative intro, a bold tagline, or a unique snippet of your working week can do the trick.
  7. Ask questions
  8. It’s not just about selling. It’s about connecting. Ask others what they do and listen. Most people love talking about their businesses – and they’ll appreciate you more if you’re interested in them.
  9. Follow up – book the 1:1s and virtual coffees!
  10. The fortune is in the follow-up. A quick DM, email, or connection on LinkedIn keeps the convo going. You never know who needs your support next week.

Ready to Take the Pressure Off Networking?

Keep showing up, keep building relationships, but also… let the directory do some of the work for you.

With NO upfront fees, you can come along and pay as you go from as little as TEN POUNDS a meeting.”

Networking is Great. But Being Found is Even Better.

Networking gets you in front of a few people at a time. But what if you could be visible 24/7 – even when you’re having a nap or on a Zoom call with a client?

That’s exactly why I created Need A VA – a directory built for VAs, by a VA (hi 👋). It’s the perfect platform to get seen by businesses actively looking for help.

Here’s what makes it work:

  • You get your own listing with your skills, services, and contact info.
  • Clients can browse, click, and hire a VA without you lifting a finger.
  • It’s one of the easiest ways to show people what a Virtual Assistant does – no awkward intros or juggling required.
  • It’s super affordable. Listings start from just £4.99 a month, making it a no-brainer for ongoing visibility.

If you haven’t already, pop over to www.needava.co.uk and create your listing. It’s the extra support your business needs – and the visibility you deserve.
