The roots of virtual assistance can be traced back to the 1940s, emerging from the traditional secretarial services industry. When Sir Isaac Pitman introduced shorthand, it paved the way for the first school for secretarial training (only admitting men at the time!). The invention of the typewriter soon shifted that, and women began entering the field in growing numbers.
Fast forward to the 1990s, when technology took a giant leap forward. In 1996, Anastacia Brice, a life coach, began offering remote admin support and coined the term “virtual assistant.” She was one of the first to fully embrace working online from home to support clients around the world.
Then came pioneers like Christine Durst, who wrote The 2 Second Commute, encouraging people to work from home, follow their passion, and build a career in this new way of working.
